January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month. Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the United States. It is a condition in which elevated eye pressure may damage the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain.

Free glaucoma screening on Jan. 25 at Primary EyeCare in Selma

A free glaucoma screening will be held on Jan. 25 sponsored by Visually Impaired People, Inc. and the new Primary EyeCare Center office.

Screenings will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Primary EyeCare Center's new location at 2401 Medical Center Parkway in Selma.

AL-TOM RCD Grants Announced

The AI- Tom RCD awarded $90,000 to Dallas County organizations for the 2022-2023 grant cycle. Marie Lowder, Executive Director of AL-Tom RCD introduced grantees who gave project reports at an Oct. 24 event at the Trustmark Bank.

VIP awarded grant for garden project and to promote healthy eating

V.I.P. CEO William H. Bowman was on hand to receive a $5,000 grant for the V.I.P. garden project for the blind and visually impaired that will teach people how to raise a garden in their backyard. The grant was used to buy materials used to raise a garden. The project will also be used to promote healthy eating.

We will be meeting at Toomer’s corner and ending at the quads in front of Jordan Hare Stadium. Come celebrate the independence of those who are blind or visually impaired.
