William Bowman, pictured with Dr. Brendan Wyatt of Wyatt Kirkpatrick Eye Associates in Selma, is having his eyes checked for glaucoma during a routine eye exam.

Each January, Visually Impaired People, Inc. promotes early detection. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness. Eye exams can prevent blindness if detected early, according to Dr. Wyatt.

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steal sight without warning. In the early stages of the disease, there may be no symptoms. Experts estimate that half of the people affected by glaucoma may not know they have it.
