Alabama Eye Bank Celebrates National Eye Donation Month
November is a special month for the Alabama Eye Bank – National Eye Donation Month. This month focuses on raising awareness for eye donation, encouraging people to register to be donors, honoring the families of past donors and celebrating cornea recipients.
In the past year, the Alabama Eye Bank has had the opportunity to recover 2,734 corneas for transplantation, research and ophthalmic training. 1,534 of those corneas were used to give sight through transplant.
“The beauty of the world is startling when you haven’t see it in a while, and I tell myself every morning to be joyful. I never want to get used to this. I shall always take the best care of [this] precious gift,” said a cornea recipient in a letter to her donor’s family.
